Industrial hemp projects: from the field to the processing plant

Industrial hemp only pays off once primary processing is in place. We design farms, storage facilities and processing plants for fibre, hurd and seed, and we are part of the GO Hempnova Operational Group to re-industrialise hemp cultivation.

A crop with a future that needs engineering

Industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L. with a very low THC content) can be grown rain-fed or irrigated, needs few plant protection products and has many end markets: textiles, construction (hemp insulation and hempcrete blocks), bioplastics, food from the seed, animal bedding and biomass.

In Spain the challenge is not growing it but processing it close to the field: without a plant to separate fibre and hurd, farmers have no one to sell their straw to. That is why we approach hemp projects as a complete chain, from farm to industry.

We always work within the current legal framework: varieties listed in the EU Common Catalogue and the requirements of the CAP and of the competent authority in each Spanish region.

What we do in an industrial hemp project

  1. Feasibility study

Required growing area, market for each product, investment and return.
  2. Processing plant

Decortication process, building layout, bale and product storage, fire protection.
  3. Seed and food

Cleaning, drying and conditioning of seed for food use with quality systems.
  4. Permits and funding

Building and operating licences, and structuring the project to qualify for public grants.

GO Hempnova: re-industrialising hemp cultivation

Agropharm takes part in GO Hempnova, an innovative project for the re-industrialisation of hemp cultivation, co-funded by the European Union through the CAP Strategic Plan (EAFRD). The project works on the hemp value chain so that growing and processing it becomes viable in our region.

Frequently asked questions

Is it legal to grow industrial hemp in Spain?

Yes, provided you use varieties listed in the EU Common Catalogue of varieties, with a THC content below the legal limit, and meet the requirements of the CAP and of the regional authority. Use of the flower is subject to specific restrictions.

What does industrial hemp produce?

Mainly fibre (textiles, paper, composites, insulation), hurd (construction and animal bedding) and seed (food and feed, oil). Each product needs its own processing line.

What do you need to set up a hemp processing plant?

Enough growing area within a reasonable radius, a building with room to store bales, the decortication and separation line, and buyers for each product. The feasibility study sizes all of this before you invest.

Want to grow or process hemp?

We help you size the project, from the growing area to the processing plant.
