Alzheimer’s is a neurodegenerative disease that primarily affects older individuals, leading to progressive deterioration in cognitive functions such as memory, thinking, and language.
Discovered in 1906 by Alois Alzheimer, this condition begins with mild symptoms of memory loss and over time can lead to difficulties in performing daily tasks, changes in personality, and behavioral problems. In advanced stages, affected individuals may lose the ability to recognize their loved ones and take care of themselves
Cannabinoid therapy
Cannabinoid-based therapy is increasingly important for treating cognitive deficits and mental illnesses, including Alzheimer’s.
The endocannabinoid system, involved in brain regulation and inflammation, appears to be dysfunctional in Alzheimer’s. Phytocannabinoids act on this system, with THC showing neuroprotective properties and CBD helping to mitigate side effects.
Scientific evidence
Chronic microdosing of cannabinoids successfully treated an Alzheimer’s patient, using less than 1 mg of THC per day.
The study demonstrated an improvement compared to the currently approved treatment for Alzheimer’s, which slows the progression of the disease for a short period of time. Additionally, it showed positive results regarding mood changes, aggressiveness, and bipolar personality.
The patient continues to use the THC extract without any additional continuous medication after completing this study, as it has improved their quality of life.
